All DC residents who receive health insurance from DC Medicaid are invited to join us and learn how to renew your health insurance coverage. We will also hold a question and answer session at the end of the meeting.
Update Your Contact Information and/or Renew Your Coverage
Since the COVID-19 virus struck in March 2020, the District has not required Medicaid beneficiaries to renew their health coverage as usual. As of April 1, 2023, all Medicaid beneficiaries should renew their health coverage by or before June 30, 2024. Make sure your contact information is updated to know when to renew!
Check your Mail for a Medicaid Renewal Notification Letter
When your Medicaid health coverage is up for renewal, DHCF will send a letter to the address you gave when you applied for health coverage. If that address is no longer where you receive mail, you must update your contact information on District Direct as soon as possible at districtdirect.dc.gov!
What is District Direct? How do I use It?
District Direct is the District’s online portal for applying or reapplying for social service benefits and it is the best place to update your contact information so you receive important updates and know when it’s time to renew your health coverage. When will I receive my Medicaid Renewal letter in the mail and what do I do with it?
When your Medicaid coverage is up for renewal, you will be notified through a packet in the mail. Click here to view a sample notice and find notice information. It will contain instructions for renewal.
Your packet will contain instructions for renewal. You may renew your Medicaid by:
- Going online to visit https://districtdirect.dc.gov/ or download the District Direct mobile app through the Apple App Store or Google Play and reapply through District Direct;
- Mailing it back by following the instructions in the Redetermination Packet you received;
- Visiting one of the District’s Service Centers to drop it off or apply with the assistance of a service center worker -click for hours and locations.
- Getting assistance from your assigned case manager, long-term care provider, or service coordinator if you have one; or
- Faxing your application to 202-671-4400

How to Get Updates and Communicate About Medicaid Renewals
DHCF wants every beneficiary and stakeholder to know that Medicaid Renewal is coming! You can receive updates, outreach, and more information by:
- Attending Medicaid Renewals regular meetings;
- Using our Communications Toolkit for stakeholders;
- Following our District-wide Medicaid Renewal Outreach Campaign; and
- Talking to your case manager or another caregiver who helps you with your health care coverage
Regular Medicaid Renewal Community Meetings: DHCF hosts bi-weekly virtual community meetings at 2:30 pm on the Medicaid Renewal process. Recordings and slides of all meetings are in the Meeting Materials section below. The meetings:
- Provide important information on the renewal process;
- Discuss how to assist beneficiaries in the communities you serve to update their information, e.g., address and how to apply to renew their coverage; and
- Take questions and comments/feedback from the public.

Communications Toolkit and Fliers in Multiple Languages: DHCF introduced a Communications Toolkit for stakeholders with talking points and important information for you to assist Medicaid beneficiaries with the renewal process and communicate out information about Medicaid Renewal. The Toolkit also has fliers for you to post and distribute. The Toolkit has instructions on how to assist beneficiaries with updating their contact information, e.g., address, renewing their coverage, registering for District Direct, and beyond! Many components of the Toolkit were translated into languages other than English are available here.
Operational Plan for Unwinding Continuous Coverage and COVID-19 Public Health Emergency: DHCF put together a detailed plan with information about how the agency will be conducting Medicaid Renewals and end other flexibilities. The Unwinding Plan contains information on how the agency will contact beneficiaries, what coverage loss will be like, and DHCF operations before and after Medicaid Renewals. Part I covers beneficiary contact and planning for renewals and Part II covers the return to normal operations after the federal public health emergency.
Districtwide Trainings on Medicaid Renewal: The District wants to build the capacity for community partners and beneficiaries to renew Medicaid coverage. To train frontline staff and stakeholders, the District hosts monthly District-wide trainings on Medicaid Renewal. Trainings are held monthly and recordings are listed below.
Additional Outreach: DHCF wants to get the word out to the communities that you serve! We plan to run advertising campaigns through a public awareness campaign. DHCF staff and contractors are also available to participate in community meetings or events where we can connect with beneficiaries and stakeholders who will be affected by Medicaid Renewal! Other Information on Medicaid and Alliance/Immigrant Children’s Program Renewals
End of the Public Health Emergency: The end of the federal Public Health Emergency on May 11, 2023 changed a variety of flexibilities previously available to DHCF health programs. These flexibilities affect provider payments, level of care assessments for beneficiaries, and more. For more information, please see Part II of the Unwinding Plan.
Alliance and Immigrant Children’s Program: Redeterminations of eligibility in the Alliance and ICP started in July 2022 with the end of the District’s local public health emergency. For more information on that process, please see the agency’s website with a FAQ and related information.
