The District of Columbia (District) Department of Health Care Finance is gathering information about Health Information Exchanges (HIE) in the District’s metropolitan area. An HIE is an interoperable system that facilitates patient care for District residents through the secure electronic exchange of health-related information among approved, qualifying partners according to nationally recognized standards. A cohesive environment of HIEs is critical to achieving the District’s goals of reducing health disparities, improving health outcomes, and achieving savings for healthcare delivered to District residents, as described in the State Health Innovation Plan.
One of the first steps in determining how we will build this interconnected HIE environment is deciding which standards each participating HIE must meet. Through this survey, we will gain a better understanding of local HIEs’ current capacity related to accreditation, business operations, monitoring, policies and procedures, security/encryption, and functions.
