Overview
The Health Information Exchange Policy Board (HIEPB) was established in 2012 by the Mayor of the District of Columbia to provide strategic guidance on the secure and protected exchange of health information in the District. This volunteer board comprises 22 members, including public and ex-officio representatives from provider associations, hospitals, health systems, payers, providers, Medicaid beneficiaries, information technologists, and District of Columbia Government agencies.
The Board advises the Mayor and the Directors of key District agencies on policies, goals, and strategies for health information exchange (HIE) in the District. Its recommendations shape the mission, vision, geographic scope, and functional aspects of HIE operations, ensuring alignment with both local and national efforts.

Board Composition and Membership
The HIEPB is composed of 15 public members and 7 ex-officio members. Public members are appointed by the Mayor to serve three-year terms, with a strong preference for DC residents representing all eight wards.

Becoming an HIEPB Member
The DC HIE Policy Board welcomes applications from individuals passionate about advancing health information exchange in the District. Interested applicants can submit their applications online for a three-year, voluntary appointment.
Board Subcommittees
The Board develops subcommittees, consisting of Board members and public stakeholders, to advise the Board on recommendations governing health information exchange in the District. Currently, the Board has the following subcommittees: HIE Operations, Compliance, and Efficiency, HIE Stakeholder Engagement, and HIE Policy.
