Medicaid for Breast and Cervical Cancer Patients

District of Columbia Medicaid may cover individuals diagnosed with breast or cervical cancers who are in need of treatment. To qualify for Medicaid coverage in the District of Columbia for Breast and Cervical Cancer, women must FIRST be screened by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (NBCCEDP).
 
In the District, Project Women Into Staying Healthy (WISH) is the local NBCCEDP.
 
The District provides free breast and cervical cancer screening and diagnostic follow-up for eligible women through Project WISH. For more information about free prevention, screenings, and health services, call Project WISH at (202) 442-9170. Please note that Project WISH is NOT Medicaid.
 
 
Who is Eligible?
 
 
Breast and Cervical Cancer patients may be eligible under for Medicaid in the District, if you: 
  • Are under age sixty-five (65);
  • Have been screened and need treatment for breast and cervical cancer (including a pre-cancerous condition of the breast or cervix) under the Center for Disease Control and Prevention National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (NBCCEDP);
  • Are a District Resident
  • Are uninsured, that is, the individuals does not have creditable coverage for treatment of the breast or cervical cancer
  • Are a US citizen or have eligible immigration status
 
How to apply
 
 
In order for you to qualify for Medicaid in the breast and cervical cancer patients coverage category, you must be referred to the District by an NBCCEDP program. You can be approved under this coverage category if you are: 
  • Enrolled in Project WISH (DC NBCCEDP)
  • Screened under the NBCCEDP program in other states
 
What is covered?
 
  • A woman is entitled to full Medicaid coverage (services are not limited to the treatment of breast and cervical cancer).
  • Medicaid eligibility continues as long as a treating physician certifies that the individual requires active treatment for breast or cervical cancer.
